In STEM (Science, Technology, engineering and Maths), students at Melton Primary School engage in the Science, Digital Technology and Design and Technology curriculum in a range of hands-on, interactive learning experiences.
STEM at Melton Primary School is designed to promote the development of critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and collaboration in kids from an early age to prepare our students for the rapidly evolving world by equipping them with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It encourages hands-on, inquiry-based learning experiences that engage kids in real-world problem-solving and experimentation.
What does STEM look like in the classroom?
-Building coding skills using a range of robotics including Dash, Indi, Cue, Microbit and Lego then using those skills in challenges and to solve real-world problems.
-Testing scientific theories by making hypotheses’ and conducting experiments and reflecting on the results.
-Coming up with solutions to real-world problems by designing and testing prototypes, assessing the aesthetics, function and sustainability of prototypes.
-Excursions to our local creek to study the health of our waterways, bringing back samples to study under a microscope to assess the health of the creek, then designing, creating and implementing changes to improve the health of the local waterways.
– Learning about the lifecycle of animals by observing the life cycle of caterpillars, learning about their needs and finally releasing them when they are fully grown then building models to show our understanding.
-Learning about the food and fibre industry, growing food in our very own school vegetable garden and learning about the process behind your food going from farm to plate.
